Fire restrictions expand across Arizona, Nevada, California

Wednesday, July 2, 2025  — As the Fourth of July weekend approaches, the Bureau of Reclamation has announced immediate fire restrictionsOpens in a new tab. across large portions of Arizona, Southern Nevada, and Southern California in response to heightened wildfire danger. The action follows escalating fire risk due to extreme heat, low humidity, and dry vegetation throughout the region.

Counties Affected by Reclamation’s Fire Restrictions.

Effective immediately, the restrictions apply to Reclamation-managed or maintained lands in the following counties:

  • Nevada: Clark County

  • Arizona: Mohave, Coconino, Yavapai, Maricopa, Gila, Pinal, Pima, Cochise, Graham, La Paz, Yuma

  • California: Imperial and Riverside Counties

These measures are consistent with recent Bureau of Land Management (BLM) fire restrictions issued on May 13 in California, May 23 in Arizona, and June 13, 2025, in Nevada.

What’s Prohibited.

To reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires, the following activities are restricted:

  • No Open Fires: Campfires, open flames, and charcoal stoves are banned outside of designated fire pits or grills in developed recreation sites. Portable gas, jellied petroleum, and pressurized liquid fuel stoves are allowed but must be used with care.

  • Welding and Torches: Open-flame torch operations, including acetylene torches, are prohibited unless specifically authorized by permit.

  • Fireworks and Explosives: All types of fireworks, including “Safe and Sane” varieties, as well as explosive materials and targets, are strictly forbidden.

  • Incendiary Devices: Tracer rounds, steel-jacketed ammunition, and similar fire-starting materials are banned.

  • Spark Arrestors Required: All motorized equipment must be equipped with working spark arrestors.

  • Smoking Limits: Smoking is restricted to enclosed vehicles only.

Enforcement and Penalties.

Violations of these fire restrictions may result in fines, imprisonment for up to six months, or both. These rules are enforceable under Title 43 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Parts 423 and 429. The restrictions will remain in place until BLM offices in each affected area either reduce fire danger levels to Stage 1 or lift seasonal restrictions altogether.

The Bureau of Reclamation’s fire restrictions are a proactive measure to protect public lands, recreation areas, and local communities during peak fire season. Residents and visitors are encouraged to follow these guidelines and exercise extreme caution when outdoors.
