Monday, June 30, 2025 — On Friday, the Bureau of Reclamation unveiled the “Shasta Dam Cam,” a new public webcam that streams live views of Shasta Dam, Shasta Reservoir, and Mount Shasta. Mounted at the Shasta Dam Visitor Center, the camera provides continuous footage accessible online, bringing one of California’s most significant water infrastructure projects directly to the public.
The webcam’s debut coincides with the 80th anniversary of Shasta Dam, a centerpiece of the state’s water system and a cornerstone of the Central Valley Project. “Whether you’re a meteorologist looking to include a scenic live shot in your weather segment, a boater checking conditions on the reservoir, or just a curious visitor wanting a glimpse of Shasta Dam, the new web cam brings the experience to you,” said Elizabeth Hadley, Area Manager for Reclamation’s Northern California Area Office.
Shasta Dam was completed in 1945 and regulates the Sacramento River. It forms the largest water storage reservoir in California, with a total capacity exceeding 4.5 million acre-feet. In addition to storing water, it provides flood control, generates hydroelectric power, and supplies water for agricultural, environmental, and municipal uses across the California-Great Basin Region.
Visitor Center and Tours.
The Shasta Dam Visitor Center is open Friday through Tuesday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guided tours of the dam and powerplant are offered on those same days at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m., on a first come, first served basis. Each tour includes a walk across the dam, an elevator descent of 400 feet, and access to a viewing area near the spillway. The free tours are limited to 20 people, with tickets distributed an hour before each tour begins. Visitors may call 530-247-8500 for the latest tour availability.
The Northern California Area Office is based at Shasta Dam, nine miles northwest of Redding. The office manages multiple Reclamation projects and facilities, including Willows, Trinity, Lewiston, and several fish hatcheries. It also oversees water service contracts and recreational access throughout its jurisdiction.
The Shasta and Trinity River Divisions serve as essential headwaters to the Central Valley Project, supporting water supply, energy generation, flood control, and public recreation across Northern California.
