Monday, July 7, 2025 — Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum announced on July 3 a new initiative known as the Patriot ProgramOpens in a new tab., a three-year pilot effort focused on revitalizing public lands ahead of the United States’ 250th birthday. The program will invest $250 million into infrastructure improvements, preservation projects, and enhanced access to historic and natural sites.

Public-Private Investment Strategy.

The Department of the Interior stated that each federal dollar committed through the Patriot Program will be bolstered by at least 50 percent in private or in-kind contributions. This funding structure is designed to stretch taxpayer resources and encourage philanthropic support. Eligible projects include masonry restoration, trail maintenance, wildland fuel reduction, and efforts to improve public access to national landmarks.

Training Opportunities for Young Workers.

The program also includes a workforce development component, engaging youth and young adults in fieldwork and training programs. Participants will receive hands-on instruction in the skilled trades while working on meaningful conservation and preservation projects. According to the Interior Department, this focus on labor and training is meant to cultivate long-term employment pathways and instill national pride in American workmanship.

Commemorating the United States’ 250th Year.

The Patriot Program is part of a broader federal effort to prepare for the country’s semiquincentennial in 2026. The initiative aligns with Executive Order 14189, issued by Donald J. Trump, which calls for a large-scale national observance of the founding of the United States. In a press statement, Secretary Burgum described the program as a tribute to American heroes and history, emphasizing the role of shared heritage and public land stewardship in the nation’s identity.
