Wednesday, August 27, 2025 — The Great Salt Lake continues to draw widespread concern. As described by Grow the FlowOpens in a new tab., the Great Salt Lake was once a thriving saline lake that supported ecosystems, industry, and cultural identity.  It has now reached critically low levels. Its decline is linked to shrinking precipitation, dust pollution, and threats to Utah’s water supply. Scientists warn that without swift action, the collapse of the lake could have long-lasting effects on health, the economy, and surrounding communities.

In response, a nonprofit initiative called Grow the Flow has emerged to coordinate efforts to restore the lake. Founded in 2023 under the umbrella of Conserve Utah Valley, the organization seeks to unify efforts that were previously fragmented across different regions and political perspectives. Executive Director Dr. Ben Abbott leads the initiative, bringing together lawmakers, citizens, researchers, and private organizations to direct water back into the lake.

Programs Driving Change.

Grow the Flow has established several major initiativesOpens in a new tab.:

  • The Research Bridge unites social scientists, natural scientists, and institutions to study the lake and other terminal lakes around the world. The team develops proposals for funding and provides decision-makers with actionable data.

  • The Impact Fund supports these initiatives by addressing financial obstacles to long-term restoration.
