California is 100% free of drought

November 8, 2023 — The US Drought Monitor reports that California is no longer experiencing droughtOpens in a new tab..  All 54 counties are not in USDA drought disaster areas and 100% of the state’s population resides in drought-free areas.

The Drought Monitor MapOpens in a new tab. shows small portions of the state in abnormally dry conditions.  The abnormally dry conditions are depicted in yellow on the map.

As to whether the trend will continue with a 75-85% chance that a strong El Niño will occur November through JanuaryOpens in a new tab., it is unclear how the weather system will affect snowfall in California.

I think it’s crazy how one state can be drought free, but the other states have drought.

It’s a rainshadow. Getting good moisture in from the Pacific, but it struggles to move past the Sierra Nevadas. So central California gets inundated, and everything east of that range gets nada.
