January 27, 2025 — The Bureau of Reclamation announced last week that it awarded a $7,892,138.90 contract to Sidewinders, LLC, of Magna, Utah, for work at the Boysen Power Plant near Shoshoni, WyomingOpens in a new tab.. The project will rewind both generator units at the plant. Combined with other necessary upgrades, this work will reset the service life of the equipment and produce higher energy output.

A generator rewind involves removing the old winding coils, installing new coils, and insulating the complete winding. Under this contract, both the stator cores and coils—the stationary parts essential for power generation—will be replaced.

Project Timeline and Operations.

Work is scheduled from January 1, 2026, through December 31, 2027. While the first unit is undergoing maintenance, river releases through the power plant will be paused. During that time, water deliveries to the Wind River will continue from the Boysen Dam spillway. When work on the second unit begins, unit one will already be back online.

Power Generation Impact.

The Boysen Power Plant contributes electricity to the Western Division’s Pick-Sloan Missouri Basin Program, benefiting the entire service area. It houses two 7,500-kilowatt units, each operating under an average head of 99 feet, for a total installed capacity of 15,000 kilowatts. The planned rewind should help maintain reliable power output for years to come.
