Water is one of four fronts in Interior’s AI push

The Genesis Mission is a government-wide effort led by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. According to the Interior Department, it uses artificial intelligence to speed up scientific discovery, strengthen American energy production and support national security.

Artificial intelligence, in this setting, is not a chatbot. It is software trained on enormous piles of measurements so it can spot patterns and make predictions faster than people can. That software needs raw material. Interior says it holds a great deal of it.

Where water enters the picture.

The Department listed four national challenges where it believes its science fits. One of them is water.

That challenge, titled Predicting U.S. Water for EnergyOpens in a new tab., calls for Interior to supply hydrologic data, drought forecasting, reservoir operations science and water reuse research. Hydrologic data is simply information about water: how much of it there is, where it sits and how it moves through rivers, snowpack and the ground below.

The stated purpose is to improve water management and what the Department describes as energy resilience. Power plants need water. Reservoirs store it. Drought shrinks it. The announcement grouped those pieces together under a single heading.

Water is one part of a larger list. Three other challenges sit beside it.

The three other assignments.

Critical minerals.

The first is called Securing America’s Critical Minerals Supply. Interior said it would contribute geologic mapping, mineral assessments and artificial intelligence analysis of resources, all in support of developing critical minerals inside the United States.

Energy below the surface.

The second carries the title Unleashing Subsurface Strategic Energy Assets. Here the Department listed geologic, geophysical and seismic data. Seismic data comes from vibrations that travel through rock and reveal what lies underneath. The stated use is advanced modeling of the nation’s underground energy resources.

Biology and industry.

The third is Scaling Biology for American Industrial Leadership. Interior said it would supply genetic, ecological and biodiversity data, meaning records of living things and the systems they belong to. The Department expects that information to feed artificial intelligence work in biological research, ecosystem science and biotechnology.

Placed side by side, the four challenges show water sharing space with minerals, fuel and living systems. The Department described itself as well positioned to lead on all four.

Which agencies hold the data.

Interior pointed to the U.S. Geological Survey, the Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management and other bureaus.

Between them, those agencies run monitoring networks, conduct resource assessments and publish scientific research. The Department said that material provides what is needed to train, test and put advanced artificial intelligence models to work at a national scale.

The dollars behind the announcement.

Interior said it will direct roughly $110 million toward data and research supporting the Genesis Mission in fiscal years 2025 and 2026. That money follows the new National Science and Technology Challenges the White House announced the same day.

The Department also said approximately $405 million remains actively supporting ongoing scientific research and data collection.

The announcement did not break down how much of the $110 million goes to water work as opposed to minerals, energy or biology.

What officials said.

Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum framed the effort as part of a broader national push on artificial intelligence and energy.

“The Department of the Interior is providing the scientific foundation that makes that leadership possible,” Burgum saidOpens in a new tab..

He also pointed to improved water forecasting as one of the results he expects, alongside mineral mapping and geologic research.

What the announcement left out.

The release stayed general. It named no specific river basins, no individual reservoirs and no timeline for when new forecasting tools might reach the people who manage water day to day. It did not describe how the data would be shared, or with whom.

What comes next.

Leaders from the federal government, industry and academia were scheduled to discuss the effort at the Genesis Mission SummitOpens in a new tab., held July 22 in Washington, D.C.

The Department said it remains committed to delivering scientific information, resource assessments and technological capabilities in support of the Administration’s priorities.

For now, the water piece of the Genesis Mission rests on a familiar foundation: gauges in streams, sensors in snow, records kept for decades. The new part is what the computers may be able to do with all of it.
